The VFW Silver Spring Memorial Post 2562 is participating in the VFW Voice of Democracy and the Patriot’s Pen Essay Programs by inviting High School and Middle School students to enter the essay contests for their respective grade levels.
For High School Students
:There is the Voice of Democracy audio/written essay contest, with the audio (taped) part not to exceed five minutes.
The theme is "Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans benefit today’s youth by . . ." and must be the sole subject of the essay.
The written essay must be typed in clear language with no personal references. Essays must be completed and submitted by November 1, 2008.
The first place winner who competes with all the first place Department (State) winners , receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the student’s American College or University. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department (state) first place winner receives and all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC sponsored by Target.

The theme is "Serving and Sacrifice by American Veterans" and must be the sole subject of the essay.
