The Trumpeter

May — June 2010

From The POST COMMANDER

As most of you know, I did not run for a second term as Post Commander for the 2010 – 2011 year.  The past year has been a great learning experience and sometimes, a challenging time, for me as your Commander.

I would like to thank all of you who helped me during the year.  I would especially like to thank Bob Wolpert for stepping up to take the daunting job of Quartermaster.  Bob did a lot to straighten out our financial situation.  I also want to thank the Men’s Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary for all of their support.

I am sure that everyone will help to support the new Commander, John Hoffman, as much as you have me this past year.  It has been an honor to serve as Commander of Wheaton Post 2562.

Please continue to come out and enjoy and support your Post.

I hope to see everyone at the convention in Ocean City this year.

I would also like to wish John the best in his new office of Post Commander.

Sincerely,

John (Phil) Seibel, Post Commander

Service Officer’s Report

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed and sent to the Senate the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, a bill to improve women's services at VA health-care facilities, provide better support for caregivers of disabled veterans, expand mental-health services and reduce homelessness.  The cost estimate of the added services is about 1 percent of the VA budget.

The bill calls for VA mental-health professionals to be educated and trained to handle sexual trauma cases.  It authorizes a study to identify barriers preventing women veterans from seeking the VA health-care benefits they've earned.  It sets up a pilot program to provide childcare services and provides 7 days of health care to newborn children of women veterans.  It improves VA rural health care and increases access to mental health care.  It even gives more care and services to veterans who've been exposed to Agent Orange and other chemicals in combat zones.

Other provisions include:

  • Prohibition of co-payments for veterans who are catastrophically disabled.

  • More locations to help homeless veterans.

  • A study on military and veteran suicide.

Spring has finally arrived along with green grass and beautiful flowers.  Enjoy!

May 31 is Memorial Day – so come honor our fallen servicemen and servicewomen at Wheaton Veterans Park at 11 AM.  There will be an open house for all attendees at American Legion Post 268 following the ceremony.

We are sponsoring a “Bring a Dish” party on the Fourth of July, which is on a Sunday this year.  Join your friends at comrades at the Post at 6 PM to celebrate the birthday of the USA .

As usual, it was a busy year for us.  I thank everyone who helped with our projects.  You all did a great job fulfilling our obligations.

The next meeting is May 25 at 7 PM.  We will be going to convention in June, so there will be no June meeting.

God bless the USA and all our service personnel.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It appears to have its roots in the South where women’s groups laid flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers.  It was originally called Decoration Day.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on 30 May 1868.  It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May.

Please join us in Wheaton Veterans Park at 11 AM on Monday, May 31, to help pay tribute to “those who gave their all” for our country.

From the POST COMMANDER

I would like to thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me as your Commander.  I hope to continue the turnaround on the financial front, a turnaround which started with the election of my predecessor, John “Phil” Seibel, and the addition of our very able Quartermaster, Robert “Bob” Wolpert.

As members of Post 2562, please remember that the Post can only survive when its members are committed to our ideals and participate in the processes and functions that keep the doors open.  If you see something that needs to be done and you are capable of doing it, please take care of it.  If you cannot take care of it, please bring it to the attention of our Post Home Chairman, Rick Newcome, or one of his assistants, Richard Wright and Tim Sullivan.

Veteran’s organizations in the state and around the country have been closing their doors.  If we do fail, let it be because there are no more wars, thus no more veterans eligible to join us.

Sincerely,

John Hoffman, Post Commander

From the EDITOR

Dear Readers,

You may notice some changes to the newsletter.  The masthead (top of this page) has been redesigned for two reasons: to create more space to bring you important information, and; to comply with the postal regulations for nonprofit organizations.

If you have a computer, you have the opportunity to save your Post some money and to get your newsletter earlier than the postal service will get it to you.  I will be more than happy to send it to you as either an MS Word document or in Adobe pdf format.  The Post will save money on printing and postage and you will be able to read The Trumpet before your comrades get it in the mail.  Please email me (jmark47@gmail.com) and let me know if you would like to receive it as either a Word doc or a pdf file.

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.

Service Officer’s Report

Have an illness or ailment that you think is the result of something that happened while you were in the service?  Know another Vet who complains about aches and pains and blames it on something that happened while he or she was in uniform?

You or they may have the basis for a VA disability claim.  It’s not that difficult to file a claim, it usually doesn’t cost you anything other than time and postage, and (contrary to what you might have heard) it’s not like pulling teeth.

If you think you may have a claim, call me at 202 258-9918.

Ladies Auxiliary

Dear Ladies,

The year is in full swing and we have lots and lots planned!  Congratulations to all of the officers who were elected for the Post, Men’s Auxiliary and Ladies Auxiliary.  A BIG HAND to our Auxiliary for receiving the following awards in our division at the convention: Cancer Aid & Research - 1st Place ; Legislative - 2nd Place .  Congratulations to Cathy Williams on “President of the Year” runner up in our division.  My thanks to everyone who helped in the “Hospitality Room” and made it a success!  We worked hard, played hard and had fun!  God bless the women!

My plan for this year is a once-a-month “Bring a Dish” with a different theme for each one.  The first one was June 20th and it was GREAT!  On July 4th, we will be having a “Great American Backyard Barbeque” bring a dish.  August 14th will be “Hawaiian,” September 25th will be “Italian,” October 30th will be “German,” November 20th will be “All American Thanksgiving,” and December 18th will be “Soup & Stew.”  If you put on your thinking caps, you will be able to come up with some easy and good recipes to share with all of us!  I know all of you can cook, so be creative and PLEASE participate in every “Bring a Dish.”  Lots of other things are also planned for these nights, so come on out and join us!

We will be having a Coat Drive in September.  We need clean, used coats of all sizes - men’s, women’s and children’s - to give to the needy for winter.  We will be taking them to St Luke’s Lutheran Church and Shepherd’s Table.  So clean out those closets and give us your old coats.

We have decided to do Taco Night once a week on Mondays from 6 to 8.  Please come and support us.  The Ladies Auxiliary needs to support its programs and the only way we can is with donations from all of you.  So have a couple of tacos and support us!  Tacos will be 2 for $4.50 with lots of fixin’s!  That is also Ace of Heart night - so you can take a chance at winning the pot for that too!

I would like to see the ladies “PARTICIPATE” in the activities we have scheduled.  I know you can’t come to everything, but the Post and Auxiliaries need YOU!  Have a safe and fun summer!  God bless you and your families.  And of course, “God Bless our Troops” all over the world.

Debbie Smith, Auxiliary President

DUES NOTICE:: 2011 Dues are now being collected.  If you haven’t already paid your dues, please send a check to Marie Bunting today.

Men’s Auxiliary

Members,

I want to thank all the players and everyone who helped to make the golf tournament a success.  We raised over $2,100 for the Wounded Warriors Project.

Joe Calloway and Mike Williams did a great job setting up the event.  We had help at the course from Chip Carly and Bruce Bates and help with food at the Post from Johnny Webber, Iris Webber and Cathy Williams.
